printing in OS 10.3

Hi, having been noticing an interesting problem with printing. I can 
print from Word, but not from other programs. this has happened on 
two computers.

ibook 700 10.3
and G4 1.25 10.3
The error is in the printer utility which stops if I send a document 
from Preview, or Accountedge, but is happy to handle word documents. 
I try changing the settings to get it moving, but it goes back to 
stop.

any ideas?

printer is Epson C82
