Adam,

It sounds like whatever you're trying to watch is most likely an MPEG2 file (as you are probably aware there are multiple types of files with a .mpg extension; such as MPEG-1(VCD), MPEG -2(DVD is based on this) and MPEG 4 ) . Apple in its infinite wisdom decided that MPEG2 playback in Quicktime should not be free, so a plug in which you pay for is required if you wish to play MPEG2 files in quicktime:

of course it get's even more fun than that in that MPEG2's which are the standard for DVD. A DVD's VOB files can have one of several audio formats and apples MPEG2 plugin doesn't support the standard used by most commercial DVDs which meens playing a VOB through quick time will give you video but no sound track. Good enough if you want to do screen captures (ripping a VOB to disk deletes Apples no screen shots from DVD function) not good enough if you want to edit down films to include in training/educational sessions :(

work in progress.
