how much free space do you have left on your hard disk? optimisation can be done with a surprisingly small amount of free hard disk space but given that it may be shuffling a dozen or so files around simultaneously to free contiguous space there are limits. Possibly try backup some of your larger files to CDr/w, DVDr/w or external HD then erase them from your hard disk. My Powerbook took over 12 hours to optimise the first time (after 6 months of use) then the next time (6 months later) after backing up then deleting all my files bigger than 100 Mb (mostly aiff, mov, photoshop .VOB <hu humm> files) it took less than 5 hours.

Optimisation is more like Hanoi Towers than a Rubics cube (sp?)

If my 20 year old memories of programing lectures serves me right (not 100%)- the process of optimisation works (kinda in it's most basic form) like this... Read a chunk of file A and make a copy of it else were on the disk, write the new location of chunk of file A to the file allocation records and up date the files leaf pointers, read a chunk of file B and make a copy of it were the old chunk of file A was (you do not instruct it to explicitly over write A's old space just that file A is file A because it happens to be in the next disk block from the previous chunk of file B) then update your file allocation records and leaf pointers. Repeat until done.

As such you always need more disk space that the sise of the two chunks that you are moving around.,

SO....

allocating more memory is probably not going to work - I remember being told quite firmly by a programming tutor that when we wrote data optimisation tool all data must be written to disk before file record tables were updated rather than storing any of it in volatile RAM one surge or brown out and you will lose data, guaranteed. More disk space will spead it up by having more swap space but more memory MIGHT speed it up some more if the program can handle bigger chuncks in its individual read write actions

Hi

Does anyone know of a way around this common warning when using TechTools Pro 3? Mac TiBook 550/448/OS9.2/OSX 2.8/2x partitions on HD.

'The Volume "Work Disk" does not have sufficient contiguous free space to optimize file 'whatever.jpg'

'whatever.jpg' can be a movie, image, document or any file it seems. The program works fine and cleans both drives, also fine for Optimizing, it does one drive, then this warning happens. Do I change memory allocation? or is there another workaround to this? I am booting off the CD and it is not installed on system at all.

Thanks
Jon
