For the archives:
Thanks for everyones suggestion.
Not having a firewire cable, I duplicated the DVD (via the finder) on
the DVD machine (emac).
This created a folder (copy)
Then dropped that folder into the shared folder on the emac
Mounted the shared folder on the CD (G4) Mac desktop.
Ran the installer from the G4
Bingo
Garage Band on a DVD-less Mac (This will be a fun weekend)
