It is backward compatible in both directions in theory. In practise, some USB controller chipsets don't like some USB device chipsets, especially early USB2 device chipsets. I've had no problems using USB2 devices on 1.1 systems and vice versa, but others do report issues. I'm surprised to hear it won't work on /any/ of your tested systems, though - perhaps the USB2 chipset in the disk enclosure isn't as standards compliant as it could be? Craig Ringer
