the basic facts:
4 separate computers all running 10.2 or 10.3
2 x Powerbook, 1 x eMac, 1 x G4 mirror door.
4 external firewire drives - utilizing 3 different firefire/USB2
interface bridges.
all machines patched to the latest release of their respective OS version.
all ide/firewire interface bridges recent purchases so no firewire
+ oxford 911 clashes
all machines using all firewire drives having problems mounting with
System mounting (at best) only occasionally.
Once an external drive fails to mount the devices only showing up in
system profiler as "FireWire 400" device.
Once a mac's failed to mount any single firewire drive it, usually,
would no longer mount any other firewire drives during a session.
sometimes a few hours or a few days later the mac would mount the drive.
all drives mount using USB, generally without problems but sometimes
would mount and then report disk problems or just constantly hit the
drive with read requests (like bad block re-reads)
running repair permissions on the internal (boot) drive seems to
resolve issues for a few days/weeks.
Removing the drives from external cases and mounting them inside the
mirror door had no problems mounting the drives and disk tools
reported no obvious or consistent problem .
no problems on any of these machines using an iPod - the iPod would
always mount if and when it was daisy chained through the FirewWire
Bus or mounted on a separate FireWire bus.
any ideas, clues or hints?
