I think you will find this is the same for Computers in general, not much has changed Apple one that has total new offering with the G5, but still hd, ram and general bits and pieces have not progressed much? Speed hikes
I think really what's happened is there are no new "killer" applications or operating systems that NEED more than what constitutes the middle ground general consumer/business end of the market. this is in both the Mac & PC side.
Sure the guys like professional Audio Engineers, CAD/CAM, Graphic Artists, Video/film editors and scientific research people will always buy in to the faster is better particularly if they operate with in a competitive market but even they can now build network arrays of computers.
unless the next version of Windows or Mac OS uses a real time, near photo-realistic virtual reality 3D interface the need for speed may have peaked for the next couple of years.
Even high demand games like UT2004 & Halo can be run on 2 year old Pentium 4's and old high end Pentium 3's so long as you have a good video card and enough memory.
