Warning Will Robinson!!!

Just downloaded and tried to install the Office 2004 Test Drive. Warning bells started tot go off when it unceremoniously installed a heap of fonts which I know are already installed. No questions, no warnings, it just dumped them in. Apart from that, everything seemed to go OK until I launched Word. It got to the point of optimising the font menu and hung. And hung. And hung.

Forced quit and tried again. This time the program would not get part the initial splash screen. Tried Excel, same thing.

Along with the software an uninstaller is provided, so I ran that. Worked very quickly at dumping everything into the trash, INCLUDING THE FONTS! Now I can't empty the trash from the Finder because, naturally, it thinks the fonts are in use. Of course they are, because they were already installed.

What a mess. Treat this with very great caution. It runs for you, great. Just don't try to remove it when you're finished. Time for some Terminal action...

Had you gotten your Suitcase "issues" sorted out before you tried running the test drive?

Admittedly I have been testing Office2k4 for the better part of 6 months and had not had a single issue like the one you described.
