My 25MHz LCIII with 8MB of RAM ran NetBSD/m68k sort-of OK in text mode, but I didn't even bother trying X - there seemed little point. At that time, I was using it as a web server to test Perl CGI scripts, because MacOS 7 lacked a loop-back TCP/IP interface (in fact, I think even OS9 might) and I needed a UNIX machine anyway. Even Linux/PPC on a PowerMac 7100/66 with 32MB of RAM was pretty slow. It ran X (good 'ol WindowMaker, which BTW you can get on OSX via Fink), but not overly quickly. It did good duty as a 56k dialup gateway and firewall for a year or so, though, using onboard ethernet and a NuBus ethernet card. It did get me into Linux, too, and my P100 with dual 4GB SCSI drives was an astonishing upgrade. I'm rather curious about what you want to use the machine for, actually. Craig Ringer
