Hi All! For those interested here are the notes from tonight's meeting. (So much easier when you actually have a laptop to take the notes on.) :o)
--- Q and A --- When IE opens it opens the first favourite, but not the next favourite as it crashes, and has done since Panther was installed. Works fine in Safari. Safari Enhancer will help you bring in your favourites from other apps like Safari, Mozilla, Netscape etc. Also consider looking at the preferences for Internet Explorer and remove these. IE has also been discontinued so it's worth while going to Safari. A lot of Spam for cheap software at the moment. Better to stay away from it as it's more than likely pirated and not worth it. -- Peter Hinchliffe demos making VCD's --- Peter talked about how to make movies without having a video camera. All you need is a burner. After taking some photos of the meeting, he then opened iMovie and started a new project. From within iMovie you can access the photos from iPhoto then add the effects you want. So after choosing the starting photo and choosing the pan in effect, choosing from where you want it to start from you select add. After rendering it in you end up with a finished photos. You can then repeat with different effects and pictures as you go through and add them to your project. All it takes is a little bit of playing and attempting as you get the "overall" project going. You can then add the sound as well from iTunes, using your own music collection. Once you have it all done you use a little program called MMT-EZ, which is available from VersionTracker. You then say you want to make a VCD, chosoe the file, insert a Blank CD and the program does the rest for you. It takes a small while for it to go through and format and burn the VCD for you. Once it's finished you can view it on most DVD players as well as on your Mac using a program called VLC (Also from VersionTracker.) Once the CD is burnt you can view it like a media player using VLC. Click play, tell it's a disc and it's a VCD and it does the rest for you. The finished product is very good, and the demo we made at the meeting was very good for the few minutes we spent on it. ;o) -- Matt then showed off SubEthaEdit --- After those with laptops linked in and got the program off Matt's laptop we then all linked together and used the same program to work together to write a text document. It allows you to link in and allow a lot of people to work on the one document and write different things together. It allows you to work together on a rendezvous network as well as across the internet also. It's classed as a text editor with the ability for a "community effort" to work together. Very interesting! Download it off Versiontracker and have a look,...well get some people to link together. :o) -- Peter then showed off BasicBackup --- Also available from Versiontracker and it's free. It is a small program that allows you to backup folders and files that you set and then for it to backup to another spot on a drive or another drive very easily. A very compact neat little app. It also works in Mac OS9 and Mac OSX. Best of all it's free!!! It does a backup where it only backs up files that have changed, so you don't end up with duplications. --- Time Server?? --- If you want your time schyronised all the time to the correct time, you now can do it off the wamug server. To do this: Go to System Preferences, then Date and Time. Under the Date and Time Tab, tick where it says "Set Time & date Automatically" and then type in the follow: time.wamug.org.au This will then link to a local server and keep your time correct!
