After Matt’s several laughs from items in a 1995 Mac magazine, I hunted back through a collection of worthless paper to my 1st Oz MacWorld mag, for Feb 1988.

A few items make even these old bones chuckle and rattle. This was the month they reported on the MacWorld Jan Expo, and the release of the Mac II. A crowd of over 50,000 were enthused.

Page 62 was a full page ad for The Red Devil, a refurbished souped up SE.It had 2 megabytes of RAM, a 30 megabyte internal hard disk and a SCSI port. “In short its a screamer!!” the say. And upgraded to an extended keyboard to boot.

The ad went on to tell all why they had doubled the RAM, added 10 megabytes of hard disk. Because of the large files created by Hypercard, which itself came on 4 (800) floppies – over 3 megs!

And all that for a mere $5,990.

Page 21 was another full page ad, this time for RAM, published by Computer Drive Pty Ltd. Prices as follows:

2.0 Mb $1,045, Apple $1,899
4.0 Mb $2,040, Apple $3,798

Another full page from the same people had hard disk prices which are interesting:

30Mb Internal $1,475, External $1,675
45Mb Internal $1,995, External $2,195
80Mb Internal $2,795, External $2,995

And they were SCSI based, 16 times faster than floppies.
