One "hot" rumor is that Motorolla will supply Apple with single chip dual processor G4's on a that will address many issues...
of course you do have to remember the last 3 years have been somewhat unusual in regard to desktop/laptop pricing/performance matrix. With few significant leaps in high end hardware performance (and those that did offering no _real_ benefit to 90% of users ie SOHO & office users) many business/educational buyers chose laptops over desktops causing increased demand leading to increased supply leading to greater economies of scale leading to cheaper laptops creating a second wave of home and student buyers. As a result we've seen laptops giving performance/price figures that are justifiably close to those of a desktop particularly when you factor in other advantages such as FBT salary packaging (of course they are often ignorant or choose to ignore the significant disadvantages of laptop ownership as my work place is starting to discover now).
Now we are seeing a return to the older pricing/performance area were desktops are cheaper but deliver significantly higher performance than the equivalently marketed laptops.
My 1GHz G4 PowerBook is certainly no slouch and performs even the most high end applicationsI run with ease (ie PhotoShop & Painter) so except for the age/reliability (and newness/geekness/coolness) factor I don't have a need to upgrade to a G5
