Hi all,
can someone give me the low down on desirable/essential features
with ADSL providers?
I understand peering is good but any particular ones WAIX VIX etc
better than others?
Do any Perth ones offer you access to VIX? I'd assume they'd only
offer you WAIX access, which I'd probably recommend (for example it's
got an Akamai server there, I believe)
I consume nowhere near my download quota each month. And Westnet seem
to double it every 6 months or so for no additional cost. I'd suggest
that a fixed IP may also be desirable.
Once I find a provider of choice what is the basic procedure that
occurs? I mean who is in charge or making an RJ45 plug appear from
my existing phone line to plug into the DSL router? Telstra or who?
Existing phone line plugs into the BYO Modem (which presumably you've
bought). ADSL Router has RJ45 which plugs into Mac/Switch/whatever.
Eventually (average apparently 11 days for Westne) you get
notification (via phone call or SMS) from your ISP saying that
Telstra have swapped over your line at the exchange. (Or, that they
lost the order, setting you back a fortnight or so). Then you go
around and fit ADSL line filters on all the normal telephones/fax
machines on the same line. Fire up the ADSL router and make sure it's
got your accountname/password entered. Sit back and surf. And listen
to the sound of people banging at the firewall...
Have fun,
Shay
