TIFF download woes

Our library has a system called LIDDAS for delivering documents that 
arrive  via interlibrary loan?  I manage to get them downloaded as 
TIFF files but both Acrobat and Preview tell me the files are 
corrupt. This is very frustrating as the original files are deleted 
automatically five days after you access them.  The online Help 
information is useless for Macs (still talking about system 8.0!) . 
Running OSX.3 and Internet Explorer 5.2.   The default plugin does 
not work for these files.
