I just downloaded some BOinc software from SEti that says
* Macintosh OS/X, Unix and Linux users: Use gunzip to
uncompress if your browser has not done it for you. Then chmod +x
on the executable and run it.
Please excuse me. What on earth does this mean?
The file says, there is no default application
The client is Unix based, so you'll need to run it in the terminal.
So you'd download it to somewhere and then open terminal and type
gunzip
then drop the file into the terminal window and hit return. This
uncompresses the file
Then type
chmod +x
and drop the now uncompressed file into the terminal window and hit
return. This sets the file's executable bit.
Then drop the file into the terminal window and hit return. This will
run the commandline application and prompt you to answer some
questions and enter your magic codes that SETI have e-mailed you.
Personally I'd recommend waiting for the GUI version if this all
sounds too difficult :)
So, for example you might see
machine: gunzip ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin.gz
machine: chmod +x ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin
machine: ~/Desktop/boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin
Have fun,
Shay
