Yeah it probably would be poor manners for someone to post a reply to a
private mail onto the list if the person doing it actually noticed that
the mail they received actually was private.
I agree that there isn't much that can be done if people decide that
they don't want to post replies but to me the mailing list isn't a free
service where I ask for help with nothing in return.
When I see someone post a question or a problem that I can help with
I'm always happy to be able to do so.
The mailing list is more about sharing to me. It's not a case of
whether people feel like replying or not because they aren't getting
paid. I doubt there is anyone on this list that hasn't run into some
sort of problem they've had trouble fixing by themselves. Sometimes
there's someone that has managed to fix a similar problem in the past
and a simple email can make life alot easier.
In terms of large posts, I find it annoying that sticking to the
guidelines (posting all relevant information) may actually discourage
people from replying.
If it was just a problem about Starcraft I may not have been all that
worried about posting to the list but I felt that my problem may have
something to do with the use of my new hard drive.
Anyway I think the problem may have somehow fixed its-self.

It's certainly VERY poor manners to post something to the list that was
written privately.
It irritates me that I seem to have posts that are frequently
unanswered (approximately 2/3 of my posts).
I run into the same issue on other lists myself. It's frustrating, but
there's little to be done about it. Mailing lists are, after all, just
collections of other people with an interest in the topic - if they
don't know, don't care, or can't be bothered that's just part of the
deal. Frustrating when you have a question, but inevitable unless
you're
paying them for support.
I know other people have
unanswered problems also but it doesn't seem like this occurs at such
a
high proportion for them. Perhaps it's because I can usually figure
out problems myself, therefor most of my problems are too complicated
for the people on this list.
I suspect that's the issue I run into some of the time as well, though
at other times I simply write excessively verbose posts nobody can be
bothered reading ;-)
I also have another possible theory; I always try to provide as much
information as possible (one of the list guidelines), however with so
much information perhaps people can't be bothered reading through all
of it.
Yep. One has to be careful to structure things so that the real issue
is
at the top, etc.
