My home automation machine (a 400MHz AGP G4 I bought a few months
back off eBay) had an episode - after a lockup I rebooted and got the
endless grey spiral. Single user mode gave me a "invalid bit / node"
message of sorts. Previous experience seems to indicate this kind of
message means you're going to have to reinstall X again...
I wasn't able to boot either my TechTool 4 / Disk Warrior CDs on the
machine - I was thinking perhaps the drive (just a CD-ROM) was
perhaps swapped in at some stage in the machines life. I also used to
get "Waiting for Root Device" messages when booting in verbose mode -
something that apparently points to somewhat incompatible CD-ROM
drives...
Anyhow I yanked the drive out, put it in a FireWire case (I have no
other ATA Mac) and ran Disk Warrior on it.
Sadly putting the drive back in the G4 only gives me the grey
"prohibit" symbol.
So I gave up and figured I was going to need to do a reinstall (10.3)
However booting from the installer CD gives me "Illegal instruction"
messages (at least I'm fairly certain that's what it was).
My guess is its a flaky / incompatible CD-ROM. I guess a swap will
prove that. Anyone else comment on possible problems?
