A lot of our clubs who have their own domain names have used very cheap registrars and have no end of trouble with them. They can't use the domains to their potential. In contrast, I've not had any hassles using MelbourneIT, so I imagine that one component of the price is "customer service". I don't have any opinion on the matter myself, as all I do these days is renew domains that already work.
