Thanks to Shay and Tom for the advice,
The machine shipped with 10.1 and the new install discs were 10.2
bought later.
I suppose this is a good excuse to go back and buy some Panther CDs.
Hate wiping discs and reinstalling all but oh well must bite the
bullet. Once again I appreciate the help guys - regards,

It sounds like your install is broken. At that stage I'd probably get
everything off the machine, erase the hard drive (with the 'write
zeros' option turned on, it'll take a while) and try again with a
different set of install disks.
