I have some files that are AVI and I would like to transfer them to
Quicktime MPG.
What is the surest way to transfer them

Quicktime pro will do the job, unless you are wanting to make MPEG2s,
which is a proprietary format. For that you have to get the MPEG2
component which comes with FCP4, DVDSP or you can buy it online at
<http://www.apple.com/quicktime/buy/mpeg2playback.html>
MPEG2 is not really the best codec for many purposes though, and
there are lots of great alternatives that won't cost you to produce,
and can be seen on other people's Macs without them having to buy the
MPEG2 playback component.
