I have been following the comments on iPhoto5 with interest especially
those regarding speed which I have found abyssmal.
However, MacFixit pointed the way; the problem is in the thumbnail
sizes. With no photo selected if you click in the window background
and type 0 the thumbnails are minimized and it really flies from
thereon, opening, scrolling and closing. Alternatively you can use the
size bar at lower right and set it to minimum. Apparently for larger
thumbnails iPhoto has to recreate them from the originals!
Of course you should also turn off shadowing and the like to speed
things up.
