The second one I downloaded just expanded properly on its own, as
things usually do.

Did that, but it didn't work! However, will get back to it later

this should be a disk image (.dmg) or at least the ones I've
downloaded recently (up to an including today) are.
double click launches disk mounter and you get the installer
disk mounted then run the installer
