Fine now that I trashed the backup - weird. I also had my iPod
connected and charging for a while at the same tim but that shouldn't

Works just fine for me in 10.3.9. The big new feature, of course, is
being able to store and play videos in iTunes. It lets you play full
screen without buying Quicktime Pro. Of course, only you can decide if
this is something you need.
For the new syncing features you do need Tiger.
