Hi everyone.
I thought it might be of some use to tell of my experiences 'on the
road'. Not being a unix guru or even a Mac guru I seem to have had all
sorts of problems , mainly to do with sending (outgoing) mail servers.
My typical approach is to walk into an internet cafe, approach the
operator and ask if I can link up to his network by DHCP or plug into
dial-up. The response is VERY variable a) "Of course, sit here and let
me know if there is anything you want, you can print on the network".
(x1) Armidale The BEST by far. b) Have you got wireless? Yes (I
had :-)),go for it. c) Yes, Oh.... you have a Mac, we do not support
Macs. d) No you cannot plug into our telephone system you may infect
our computers! Quorn Library in Outback South Australia e) No you
cannot connect your laptop, not here or anywhere in Byron Bay as you
will infect our Network. I tried 3 separate internet cafes and got same
reply, they must have an agreement amongst themselves. One said there
used to be a hotel that would let you do it for $25.00 a session but
they stopped doing it last year! f) on some occasions I would get
linked up DHCP and download all my mail but no way could I upload. I
would not have changed anything since the last time when it would have
worked perfectly. I rang the ever helpful Matt(God bless Matt,Peter and
wamug :-)) and he suggested putting login and password in the
appropriate place in preferences but this does not always work. The
frustrating thing is that two operators have said,"it's because it is a
Mac, get a Windoze machine". If the operator knows their outgoing SMTP
that of course, works but many of them do not know it, they just take
the money and turn the machines on and off. I get all the spam through
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mainly drugs, very occasionally someone offering
their photos for my delectation. :-). There is nothing worse than
paying cell phone rates for porn download. :-(.
