half full the loss of 0.5Gb or more is not useful.

Not to forget that, depending on your RAM configuration, and machine
use, Mac OS X will use up to 1 GB, or more, in swap (look in <file:///
var/vm/> but don't try and delete anything!!!)
OmniDiskSweeper is a very very good tool for finding where all your
disk space has gone:
