I am considering the purchase of a machine from the dark side and would appreciate some advice on what type of mother board and processor etc would
be best suited for my needs.

For simple stability and driver support you can't go past an all Intel combo.

Intel Pentium 4
Intel Motherboard
Intel Network Card

With the motherboard, get one that supports PCI Express, then stick an Nvidia graphics card in there. Nvidia seem to have much better drivers on the Windows side than ATI does.

Oh, and spend a bit more to get a decent QUIET power supply. A lot of problems can be traced back to cheap power supplies.

That should give you a pretty stable PC.

(Though I would still recommend getting a Mac and FinalCutStudio).

I will be running Adobe Photoshop, illustrator, after effects, encore,
audition and premiere pro on the machine.

Audition and Premiere Pro are simply inferior to DVDSP and FinalCutPro in every way.

This is not my preference by the way, it has been made necessary by client
requirements.

The client is not always right.
