I am using a G4 (OS 10.3.7) at Murdoch Univ. My colleague has a PC
with Windoze XP. We do not wish to be connected to the Univ servers
but merely have the machines talk to each other via X over cable - or
sim.
It may seem a simple question, but getting anyone around the place
who says "its dead easy" to actually fix it is harder. So any advice
welcomed!
Hi Bill
Here is a little check-list:
* Crossover Ethernet cable
* Manual IP Addresses (192.168.1.1 for Mac and 192.168.1.2 for PC) and
same subnet on each computer (255.255.255.0), test with
Applications>Utilities>Network Utility>Ping.
* Choose or create a shared folder with read/write (or full) access, as
there is no real security strategy required for this connection I
imagine. Install Sharepoints on the Mac to make this bit easier. For PC
folder sharing, right click the sharefolder to access its security
permissions and give it read/write for everyone.
Connecting from the PC:
Type in the explorer address bar
\\192.168.1.1\sharefolder\
Connecting from the Mac:
Finder>Go>Connect To Server, type
smb://192.168.1.2/sharefolder/
Hopefully I have missed nothing too important :)
Have fun
Paul
