the way in which fluorescent tube characteristics affect a scan.

and if you have a dead scanner (failed logic board/ sensor transport
arm but light still working) you can turn your waste of space hunk
of plastic & glass in to a perfectly acceptable photographic light
table and/or artists tracing table for under $20 :) - link to
pictures to follow (when I can be bothered documenting and linking
them)
