Paul, You can get a number of different character, including é, from the Character Palette. If you not already have added the Character Palette to your Keyboard menu, then you can do that via System Preferences. In System Preference select International / Input Menu and tick Character Palette. You can also add any number of different langue keyboard layouts as well.
