Might be RAM. Bad RAM can give very odd symptoms. It reminds me of when I got my first Mac, a 6100/66, and it could only run 68k applications. It too displayed some very disturbing graphics. It's Apple brand ram was cactus. The guy who sold it to me eventually found it after he had blamed my own usage style. He threw in an extra 32mb while sporting red cheeks. Good luck Paul
