i am having trouble setting the preferred application to open files
of a particular type.
since installing Tiger all .csv files have a default preference to be
opened with *Script Edit*
if i do the recommended *view info* (cmd+I) on a highlighted file and
select, say Excel under *Open with* the icon at the top of the Info
panel is changed to the Excel icon as is the app in the drop down menu.
now, when i then click the *Change All* button in response to the
option to *Use this application to open all documents like this* i am
asked (possibly quite reasonably) if i want to use Excel to open all
Excel documents because that is what it is set at now!
however if i choose the *Continue* button here the application in
fact defaults to Script Editor. it behaves similarly if i choose say,
Text Edit as the preferred app. so it is not as if there is any
particular aversion to MS :)
anyway it is obviously not the question i wanted answered which was
*Use Excel to open all files previously set to opened with Script
Editor?*
If i go to the bottom of the *Open with* menu on the Info panel to
*Other* and am presented with a window where i can *Choose Other
Application* and there choose Excel, i am given the option to tick a
box: *Always Open With*. i tick that optimistically and click on
*Add* but this of course only refers to the particular file; similar
files are still set to be opened with the default app.
is this something particular to my installation of Tiger or is it a
bug in Tiger itself?
previous versions of OS X behaved themselves in this respect.
(Tiger is installed on a Ti-book 550 512Mb)
