Hi Everyone The uni where I work has had an official request from our NTEU union to see if we can help Union Aid Abroad in assisting Karen refugee journalists-in-training with unwanted cameras if anyone has got any equipment they don't want floating around.
It is a legitimate request(see below) if you do have anything. No cash/money is involved. Julie Pheasant Administration Assistant School of Population Health The University of Western Australia 35 Stirling Hwy Crawley WA 6009 Ph: 6488 1260 Fax 6488 1188 CRICOS CODE 00126G We've had a request from Laura Newlon a volunteer for Union Aid Abroad--APHEDA for donations of used cameras--anything in working order will do, whether it be a cheap, simple point-and-shoot, or a 30-year old SLR. These cameras will be used in the photojournalism training, then given to the journalist trainees to use in their future work. At the end of July, Laura will be traveling north to Mae Sot, a town on the Thai/Burma border to teach a photography workshop to Karen refugee journalists-in-training. These men are receiving occupational training as journalists in order to be able to return to Burma and report on the poor treatment of their ethnic group--the Karen people--and the other ethnic groups persecuted by the military junta that rules Burma. There is not independent media within Burma, thus the work these men do will be invaluable in documenting the human rights abuses taking place all over the country. So scour your closets, basements, and attics and please let us know if you find any old treasures you're willing to donate. Please mail or deliver direct to the following address FOR RECEIPT END JULY: Laura Newlon c/o Union Aid Abroad--APHEDA Level 3, 377 Sussex St Sydney 2000 Tel: (02) 9264.9343 OR THE NTEU UWA BRANCH WOULD BE HAPPY TO MAIL TO SYDNEY FOR BRANCH MEMBERS IF YOU COULD DELIVER TO THE BRANCH OFFICE IN WINTHROP TOWER BY WEDNESDAY 27 JULY. We would appreciate it if you could also include a brief note stating that you are donating this camera, valued at $XXX for use in the APHEDA human rights project with refugees at the Thai/Burma border. We can use your note to receive a small amount of counterpart funding (about 10%) from the Federal Government. Thank you for your help in this worthwhile project! Check back on the Union Aid Abroad--APHEDA website for more information about the project in September.
