Hi tom,
Some information that I've gathered to help with snaps from video. I've not needed to upgrade, so all the following relates to 10.3.9 with DVDPlayer 4.0. I sympathise with you on the simple still/ video capture ease - ie difficulty - with OS X (my version is 10.3.9) I found out pretty quickly that the bundled apple DVDPlayer disables all screen capture, either with keys 3 or 4 when it is playing any video, pauses or otherwise. You can't even get a snap of another app using CTRL SHFT 4 when DVDPlayer is running. After looking for the same kind of things you seem to be after - apps to quickly capture stills or short video excerpts - I landed on this one for stills:

It will get whatever is displayed on your screen exactly the same way as wiretap will get whatever sound your system is outputting.

and I just return to the very powerful and easy PowerDVD in the XP box if I need to get moving excerpts, so I've no help for moving stuff.

For your search for movie clipping, you may find it worthwhile starting at the fora run by the MacTheRipper mob
