Nah ... something definitely happening tonight.
I go to www.apple.com.au several times a day.
For the second time this evening (11.58pm), www.apple.com.au is
timing out with the message:
"Safari could not open the page “http://www.apple.com/au/” because
the server stopped responding."
And www.apple.com is just timing out with:
"Safari could not open the page “http://www.apple.com/” because the
server stopped responding."

Sounds like an internal Apple snafu.
There is no snafu. This change happened around the weekend of the
25th of June when Apple Australia moved to US hardware.
Another list I'm on noticed within 24 hours :)
