I have been plagued by vanishing disk space with no obvious answer but have found where a good big chunk has been going. Photoshop CS2 caches Camera Raw information for each picture read iand this escapes normal cache cleaning processes. Photoshop hangs on to it indefinitely. My Nikkon .NEF camera raw files each result in a 6.3MB entry so a few hundred photos really chews into the disk space.
The cache is located at:-
    useryou/Library/caches/AdobeCameraRaw

I can find no detrimental effects of junking these cached files.
