DUNNIT!!!
turns out that even thou it was 'connected' it wasn't and the reason
because I was entering the WEP 26 character key into the 'WEP
40/128-bit ascii box instead of the WEP 40/128-bit HEX box....and
when I did hey presto!! it said it was all connected to the
internet...so all good thanks for all your help.

Wew! That saves me having to suggest a system reinstall ;) - that
little iBook was subject to testing (?abuse?) of all manner of
networking stuff and I thought it may have unfortunate legacy
lurking around in its system..... Ow yeh you may, if you see a reason
for it, want to disable the SMPT server (run postitfix enabler from
applications)
