There are lots of modifications, but it's up to you to decide whether they are 'breakthroughs' or completely irrelevant to you. It does include repairs for buffer-overrun security vulnerabilities, though, and they should be of concern to everybody. Here is a copy of the 'Read Me' file that is bundled with it (I assume it is published on their website somewhere): _____________________________________________________________________ Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 (11.2) Read Me September 2005 (C) 2005 Microsoft Corporation. This service pack also includes all of the improvements released in Office 2004 Service Pack 1 (11.1.0), Office 2004 11.1.1 Security Update, and international proofing tools updates. 2 Installation 2.1 System requirements You must have Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later installed on your computer to install this service pack. Before you install the service pack, check to ensure that: - Microsoft Office 2004 or any Office 2004 program (Word 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Entourage 2004, or Excel 2004) is installed on your computer. - Any copies of the Office 2004 Test Drive have been removed from your computer. To remove the Test Drive, in the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, double-click Remove Office. Note We strongly recommend that system administrators apply this service pack before deploying Entourage 2004 within an organization. This service pack fixes many Entourage issues, including improved support for Microsoft Exchange Server accounts and migration issues from Entourage X. 2.2 Installing the service pack 1. Before you install the service pack, close all Office 2004 programs, including Office Notifications, and disable any virus-protection programs. 2. Double-click Office 2004 11.2 Update on your hard disk to begin the installation. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen. 2.3 Troubleshooting If you have trouble installing the service pack, check the following: - Make sure that any copies of the Office 2004 Test Drive have been removed from your computer. To remove the Test Drive, in the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, double-click Remove Office. - Quit any programs that are running, including virus-protection programs and any Office programs because they might interfere with installation. Then restart your computer and try installing the service pack again. - Make sure that the user account you use to log on to your computer is an administrator account. For more information about administrator accounts, see Mac Help. - Make sure you have downloaded the correct language version of the service pack for your copy of Office. - If you have problems using Office programs after you install this service pack, reinstall Office from your Office 2004 CD-ROM and then install the service pack again. 3 Exchange Server support improvements If your organization uses Microsoft Exchange Server to store information, such as e-mail messages, contacts, and calendar items, the ability to access and modify this information from your Macintosh computer has been enhanced. Continual and automatic synchronization of all of your Entourage messages, Contacts, and Calendar events with your Exchange server is greatly improved in this release, and new Exchange account features have been added. Improvements include: - Delegation access You can delegate the management of your mail, Calendar events, and Address Book Contacts to someone else by using Entourage. - Public Folders You can subscribe to and create your own Exchange server public folders, and you can access Calendars and Contacts stored in public folders. - Sharing You can share your Address Books, Calendars, and Mail folders with other Exchange users and you can open any Address Book, Calendar, or Mail folder on an Exchange server that has been shared with you. You can also mark Contacts and Calendar events in shared Address Books and Calendars as private. - Multiple Address Books, Calendars, and Mail folders You can create multiple Address Books, Calendars, and Mail folders on the Exchange server by using Entourage. - Global Address List You can look up contact information stored in the Global Address List, and when you type an e-mail address or name, Entourage automatically completes the e-mail address when it matches an entry in the Global Address List. - Exchange account synchronization Contacts and Calendar events synchronize quickly and correctly with Exchange Address Books and Calendars based on the synchronization options in your account settings. - Calendar The Calendar responds more quickly when you view and search for Calendar events, overall stability is improved, attachments in Calendar events are preserved, and you can change every field when editing a single occurrence of a recurring event. - Group by conversation You can group e-mail messages by Conversation. - Mailbox quotas You can check the sizes of all the folders in an Exchange account by using Entourage. 4 Additional improvements The improvements described below fix numerous security and stability issues in Office 2004. 4.1 Improvements for all Office 2004 programs 4.1.1 Buffer overrun vulnerabilities are fixed The update resolves a number of buffer overrun vulnerabilities that could allow arbitrary code to run if an Office program opens a maliciously crafted document. 4.1.2 Hyperlinks to .mov files can be created This update resolves an issue that prevented .mov files from being selected when you create a hyperlink in an Office document. 4.1.3 Color scans from HP Steinway Scanjet 4370 scanners can be inserted This update corrects an issue that prevented the acquisition of color scans from HP Steinway Scanjet 4370 scanners when you clicked the Insert Picture From Scanner or Camera command in Office 2004 programs. 4.1.4 Stability is improved when you add text to PICT images This update corrects an issue that could cause Office 2004 programs to quit unexpectedly when you add text to PICT images by using fonts with no available font metrics. 4.1.5 Stability is improved when a network location or alias is used for user preferences This update corrects an issue that could cause Office 2004 programs to quit unexpectedly when a network location or alias is used to store user preferences, such as a NetBoot configuration, and the network location is not available. 4.1.6 Stability is improved when you drag an AutoShape This update corrects an issue that, under certain circumstances, could cause Office 2004 programs to quit unexpectedly after you drag an AutoShape to a new location in a document. 4.1.7 Microsoft Cert Manager is improved This update improves Microsoft Cert Manager, a tool used to import and export security certificates for use with secure e-mail. The update corrects an issue that caused Microsoft Cert Manager to improperly read the expiration date for some certificates, and fixes an issue that caused Cert Manager to quit unexpectedly while exporting some certificates. 4.1.8 The capability to add Office icons to the Dock in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is fixed This update fixes an issue that prevented the Office Setup Assistant from adding Office icons to the Dock in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). 4.1.9 Black and white GIF images with transparency display correctly This update resolves an issue that caused black and white Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) images with transparency to display incorrectly when they were inserted into Office documents. To display the image correctly, apply this update, and then delete and reinsert the image into your Office document. 4.2 Improvements for Microsoft Word 2004 4.2.1 Performance is improved when you work with text or use a scroll wheel This update resolves a performance issue that caused Word to appear sluggish when you highlighted, formatted, or deleted text, formatted tables, and moved the cursor by using the arrow keys. Also, Word responds more quickly in Normal and Outline views when you use a mouse scroll wheel to scroll through a document. 4.2.2 The method for applying encryption is improved This update improves the method used by Word to apply encryption to the contents of documents that are protected by a password. 4.2.3 Bulleted and numbered styles copy correctly when the Organizer is used This update resolves an issue that prevented Word from correctly copying bulleted and numbered styles between documents and templates when you use the Organizer. 4.2.4 Stability is improved when you copy content in Notebook Layout View to an Entourage e-mail message This update resolves an issue that caused Word and Entourage to stop responding when you copy content in Notebook Layout View to an Entourage e-mail message. 4.2.5 Underlined tabs in numbered lists now display properly when the underline style is changed This update resolves an issue that caused Word to stop displaying an underline for the tab between the number in a numbered list and the first character after the number if both of those items were underlined. 4.2.6 A document that is already open in Word is brought to the front when you try to open it again This update changes the behavior of Word when you attempt to open a document in the Finder, on WordÕs File menu, or in the Project Palette that is already open in Word. Now, the document you attempted to open will be brought to the front. Previously, Word asked if you wanted to revert to the last saved version of the document. 4.2.7 Decimal tabs no longer cause numbers in tables to overlap the table border This update fixes an issue that caused tables containing decimal numbers and a decimal tab that placed the numbers very close to the edge of the table border to overlap the table border. 4.2.8 Faxes now route correctly to the fax device instead of the default printer when using macros If you use a macro to initiate fax jobs from Word, your faxes might have gone to the default printer instead of the fax device. This issue is resolved in this update. 4.2.9 OLE_LINK bookmarks no longer appear when a clipping file is created This update fixes the inadvertent creation of an ÒOLE_LINKÓ bookmark in a Word document if you dragged and dropped content from the document to the Desktop, creating a clipping file. This update also fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you pasted tables and OLE objects into other documents. 4.2.10 Stability is improved when you create a Table of Contents (TOC) in a table cell This update fixes an issue that caused Word to stop responding when you worked on documents that contained Table of Contents (TOC) fields in a table cell. 4.2.11 Smart quotes appear correctly This update fixes an issue that caused Word to improperly display smart quotes by changing some opening quotes to closing quotes under certain circumstances, such as when soft line breaks are used. 4.2.12 Rich Text Format (RTF) documents display correctly after tracked changes are accepted This update fixes an issue that prevented Word from properly saving accepted changes in Rich Text Format (RTF) documents. Accepted changes are now saved and displayed correctly. 4.2.13 Stability is improved for the Sounds Like option in the Find dialog box This update fixes an issue that caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you used the Sounds Like option in the Find dialog box. 4.2.14 Stability is improved for Print Preview This update fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you used Print Preview. 4.2.15 Stability is improved for the Style box on the Formatting toolbar This update fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you used the Style box on the Formatting toolbar. 4.2.16 Stability is improved for lists This update fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you copied and pasted lists between or within Word documents. 4.2.17 Stability is improved for the Reviewing toolbar This update fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Word to quit unexpectedly when you used the Reviewing toolbar. This update also improves the behavior and reliability of tracked changes. 4.2.18 Floating pictures print correctly when they are used in labels This update addresses an issue that caused floating pictures inserted in a label not to print or appear in print preview. 4.2.19 Documents containing tracked changes print correctly This update fixes an issue that caused documents containing tracked changes to scale to a smaller area of the page than expected under certain circumstances, such as when Hidden Text was selected under Nonprinting Characters in Word Preferences. 4.2.20 If you do not select a paper size, Word uses the first paper size in a subset For printer drivers that support paper size subsets, Word previously used the last paper size in a subset if you did not select a paper size. Now, Word uses the first paper size in the subset if you do not select a paper size (for example, the standard US Letter paper size at the top of most US Letter paper size subsets). 4.2.21 Performance is improved with Address Books that contain more than 5,000 contacts This update improves performance when you use Word with an Entourage Address Book that contains a large number of contacts. Word can be used with Entourage Address Books that contain up to 32,000 contacts. 4.3 Improvements for Microsoft Excel 2004 4.3.1 The method for applying encryption is improved This update improves the method used by Excel to apply encryption to the contents of workbooks that are protected by a password. 4.3.2 Stability is improved for Conditional Sum Wizard and Goal Seek running under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) This update fixes an issue that, under certain circumstances, caused Excel to quit unexpectedly when Goal Seek and the Conditional Sum Wizard were used under Mac OS X 10.4. 4.3.3 Stability is improved when you open .xla files by using the Project Gallery This update fixes an issue that caused Excel to quit unexpectedly if you open an Excel Add-In (.xla) file by using the Project Gallery. 4.3.4 Large pasted worksheets display correctly in PowerPoint presentations This update improves the display of large worksheets when they are pasted into a PowerPoint presentation. Previously, large worksheets displayed as truncated tables when they were pasted into a PowerPoint presentation. 4.3.5 Stability is improved when you work with cells containing many line breaks This update fixes an issue that could cause Excel to quit unexpectedly when you worked with cells containing many line breaks. 4.3.6 Stability is improved when you scroll or zoom the worksheet in Page Layout view This update fixes an issue that sometimes caused Excel to quit unexpectedly when you scrolled or zoomed the worksheet in Page Layout view. 4.3.7 Stability is improved for other versions of Excel when you open workbooks created in Excel 2004 This update resolves an issue that sometimes caused workbooks containing FileMaker queries, Compatibility Report information, or Page Layout view to quit unexpectedly in other versions of Microsoft Excel for Windows and Microsoft Excel for Mac. To resolve this issue, apply this update, and then resave your workbooks in Excel 2004. 4.4 Improvements for Microsoft PowerPoint 2004 4.4.1 Text layout compatibility with Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows is improved This update includes an improved text layout engine that provides a greater degree of compatibility between Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows and Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac. As a result, text layout on both platforms should look much more similar, with far fewer text wrapping differences. Because previous versions of PowerPoint for Mac do not include the improved text layout engine, you might see a slight difference in text layout compared to previous versions of PowerPoint for Mac. 4.4.2 Performance for movie playback is improved Playback performance for movie files that use QuickTime-supported codecs is significantly improved with this update. To improve playback performance during presentations that use two monitors, movies play only on the main presentation screen. They do not play on the presenter tools screen. 4.4.3 Stability is improved when you double-click hyperlinks in Slide Show view If you double-click a hyperlink in a presentation while in Slide Show view, PowerPoint might quit unexpectedly. This update fixes the issue, so that either a single mouse click (recommended) or a double-click opens the hyperlink correctly. 4.4.4 Stability is improved when you open presentations saved with Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows that use older PowerPoint file formats This update fixes an issue that caused presentations created by Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows and saved in the PowerPoint 97-2003 & 95 Presentation (*.ppt) format to be deleted just after being saved. 4.4.5 Only one message displays if required fonts are missing This update fixes an issue that caused PowerPoint to display a series of repetitive messages and, in some cases, quit unexpectedly if required fonts were not present on the computer. Now, PowerPoint displays one message per session when required fonts are missing, including an option not to show the message again. 4.5 Improvements for Microsoft Entourage 2004 4.5.1 End times adjust correctly after you modify a single occurrence of a recurring calendar event In previous versions, if you changed the end time of a single occurrence of a recurring calendar event and then printed your calendar by using the Weekly view, the end time of the recurring meeting was reflected in the printout instead of the modified end time of the single occurrence. This issue is resolved in this update. 4.5.2 Performance is improved when your computer is running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Entourage 2004 11.2 is optimized to prevent performance issues with new technologies introduced with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), such as the Spotlight search feature. Without this update, Entourage performance may become slow under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). 4.5.3 Delegate access works with Exchange servers in a Front End(FE)/Back End (BE) topology Delegates can now synchronize mailbox information for the mailbox owner through Exchange servers in a Front End(FE)/Back End(BE) topology through the Front End server. Previously, delegates needed direct access through the firewall to the Back End server to synchronize mailbox information for the mailbox owner. 4.5.4 Stability is improved for nested groups in the Address Book This update fixes an issue that caused Entourage to fail to send an e-mail message to a nested group in the Address Book. A nested group is a group that contains one or more other groups. 4.5.5 Stability is improved when you use an IMAP account with Live Sync enabled This update resolves an issue in which IMAP accounts that used both the Live Sync (stay connected with server) option and a Send & Receive All schedule had duplicate messages in the inbox. 4.5.6 Support is improved for .ics files This update adds support for .ics files that use Unix-style line breaks, improving compatibility with third-party online services. 4.5.7 Stability is improved for HTML e-mail messages Some users have reported strange display behavior when they compose or view HTML e-mail messages in Entourage, such as right-justified text and oversized fonts appearing in entry fields, or unexpected error messages displaying when users access other Entourage features after viewing an HTML e-mail message. This issue is resolved in this update. 4.5.8 Import from Apple Mail in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) works correctly This update fixes an issue that prevented Entourage from importing mail, rules, and signatures from Apple Mail in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). 4.5.9 Attachment size limits on sent messages are enforced correctly This update addresses an issue that prevented Entourage from correctly enforcing the attachment size limit on messages being sent through an Exchange server, causing sent messages with attachments larger than the size limit to stall in the Outbox and causing transaction log files on the Exchange server to grow at an unexpected rate. Now, Entourage alerts users when they attempt to send a mail message with an attachment that exceeds the size limit enforced by the Exchange server. 4.5.10 Updated definition for Junk E-Mail Protection This update provides the Junk E-mail Filter with a more current definition of which messages should be considered junk. Additional updates are planned. 4.5.11 Deleted e-mail messages no longer reappear when you use POP mail servers This update fixes an issue that affected users of POP mail accounts with the "Leave a copy of each message on the server" option enabled in Entourage. The issue caused deleted e-mail messages to reappear, and in some cases, appear more than once in the Inbox. 5 Previously released improvements included in this update The improvements described below were released as part of previous Office 2004 updates, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 1 (11.1.0), Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.1.1 Update, and International Proofing Tools updates. This is fixed. FileVault is an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit keys that secures your home folder by automatically encrypting the contents. For more information about FileVault, see Apple Help. 5.2.2 Security is improved when you open a document that has macros Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now support an additional level of security that affects macros that open other Office documents containing macros. You can use the Application.AutomationSecurity property to set the level of security desired. For more information about the Application.AutomationSecurity property, see Knowledge Base (KB) article KB 886633 at http:// support.microsoft.com. 5.2.3 Text changes to the font selected on the Font menu In some cases, a font change did not take effect when you used the Font menu. This happened when the WYSIWYG font and style menus check box was cleared in Preferences (on the Word menu, click Preferences, and then click the General tab) and then the Font menu was used to change the font of text in a document. This problem isn fixed. The text now changes to the font that you select in the Font menu. 5.2.4 Swiss German proofing tools are correctly detected Previously, the Compatibility Report in Word erroneously reported the following: Swiss German proofing tools are not installed. This is fixed. Now, when a message is sent from Entourage, the Info Bar shows the message as ÒSentÓ when it is viewed in Microsoft Outlook. 5.5.3 Connection to the Internet by using an internal modem is improved Previously, connecting to the Internet by using an internal modem could cause problems. Entourage attempted to connect to another internal modem or Infrared Data Association (IrDA) wireless device after it made a Point-to-Point (PPP) connection to an external modem. This problem is fixed. Entourage now connects to the Internet by using the current connection. 5.5.4 SMTP using SSL connections is improved Sending e-mail messages by using SSL connections sometimes caused problems.
