WAmuggers,
I am wanting to store my growing collection of large (17mb each) digi camera files. Looked at all the gizmos that have bells and whistles but all I need is an external hard drive (it seems to me). Just plug in and upload/download back to my laptop. Is this the way to go? I'd need say 20GB for starters.

If this is to be your ONLY storeage of those photo's , you should remember that
Hard Drives CAN fail , or have an unrecoverable crash .

I would suggest you ALSO save them to CD or DVD .

You don't mention type of Mac , but these days Firewire or USB 2 would be the most likely external connections and anything less than an 80 Gb drive is very
uneconomic.

Up around the 160Gb size it is possible to acquire an external drive down to $ 1.00 per Gb
but remember you get what you pay for.

Have fun
