Shutdown Tantrums!

My venerable Rev 3  333 MHz  iMac refuses to shut down since I 
installed  OS 10.3.9 and I have to resort to pulling the plug to get it 
to go bye byes!  This cannot be doing the little beast any good-Can 
anyone offer a solution?
