when I get attachements, usually msWord files, they get named as
defangled bla bla, which Textedit opens okay.
is renaming the file to defangled - is this a Eudora ( which I use
for email) or Mac OSX thing,
and to forward it on, ought I rename it, leave it as is, open in
Pages & export as word file or meerely change a setting somewhere ?
lately people who I have forwarded such files to ( usually to
customers) say they are unable to open the defangled attachment (
probably because they use a pc)
any suggestions appreciated

I suspect that somewhere along the line a mail server is removing any
viruses (hence *defanged*, note the absence of the letter 'l'). You
may wish to see if your ISPs or your clients mail server are
responsible for this, as it's probably what's causing problems with
the attachments. You can probably determine this by looking at the
full headers of the e-mail, which should have information about which
mail server did what to the message.
Have fun,
Shay
