Idvd 5 lets you record straight to disk from mini dv via firewire, so there's no messing around in editing applications.

If you want to palm him off completely though, there are a couple of options.

1. Get a dvd hard drive recorder. This lets you send mini dv to the (standalone) hard drive recorder, which you can then burn to disc, or you can burn straight to disc as you record.

I've got a Toshiba HDD &DVD RD-XS32 which works pretty well, although it can get tetchy about brightness and think things are copyright protected at times. There are new models coming on the market all the time.

2. Go to someone like Procopy at Morley and ask them for a price to do the lot. This is simpler but probably just as expensive as buying the dvd recorder and means his future tapes would need to be paid for as well.

3. Get a mac mini and teach him how to use iDVD. :)

4. Get a new camcorder.

Remember that dvds are not completely future proof. As someone (I forget who) said recently - 'Digital media lasts forever. Or five years. Whichever comes first.'

My son, who lives in a non-Mac, non video editing environment, has some 40 mini DV tapes which he normally plays back to TV direct from the camera. The camera shows signs of dying and he would like to preserve the tapes on DVD discs. can someone recommend a copying service and give an idea of the cost. I am not prepared to spend three weeks day and night doing it on my Mac via iMovie, etc!
