Hi WAMUGgers

I hope you have had a great Christmas and that Santa brough you something nice. Mrs Santa was very generous and gave me an iSight camera. I must have been a good little boy this year!

We've had some fun this morning iChatting around the house with a digital video camera hooked up to the PBook and the iSight on the iBook. Then Rod got online and we had a good old yak to Perth (we're in Geraldton).

Anyway whilst trawling the internet looking for some usb webcam apps to try hooking 7yo grandson's Christmas present, a Dorling Kindersley "digicool" usb camera, into iChat too, (macam - http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/; iChatUSB Cam - http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/configs.html and possibly USBStillCamera Driver - http://www.ioxperts.com/usbstillcamera.html) I came across Delicious Library at Delicious Monster http://www.delicious-monster.com/ . A bit off topic for what I was looking for but it's fantastic software.

I've downloaded the demo (up to 25 scans free) and may buy it. THe full licence is US$39.95.I've sat here scanning a range of books, DVDs and CDs from out library and collection and it's very impressive.

Basically it turns the beaut new iSight camera into a barcode scanner and it works straight out of the box. It uses Amazon.com as a database. Maybe not the best info source but impressive nevertheless. Preferences can change to various different Amazon locations. For example our first scan took us to Amazon Japan with an interesting result. Changing to UK was better, or US.

You can arrange books, videos, music etc into separate libraries and bookshelves, set up kid and adult sections, and even set up a borrower's database to keep track of all those books you've lent and forgotten about. It actually automatically imported our family members from my Address Book at first startup (- scary!) and has a nice OS X iLife appearance.

The website boasts a number of impressive awards; two 2005 Apple Design Awards, 4.5 Macworld Mice, MacMinute MacWorld Award, O'Reilly Innovators Award.

"Quickly importing your stuff into Delicious Library doesn't require a dedicated barcode scanner - you can use any QuickTime®-supported digital video camera, like your Apple iSight. Just hold the barcode on the back of any book, movie, CD, or video game in front of the camera and your item magically shows up on your digital shelf seconds later. Using the same technology found in $800 industrial-strength CCD barcode scanners, Delicious Library reads every single frame of digital video; seeking out, targeting, and instantly decoding any visible barcodes. This results in a seamless process of scanning that lets you import about 750 items an hour (assuming you can move your arms that fast). At that rate the staff of the new downtown Seattle Central Library could work together to import all of their 1.4 million books into Delicious Library in just over 5 hours."

It can also be configured to use a bluetooth scanner.

It's certainly worth a look.
Regards

Reg
