Most scanners will scan negatives and slides with an additional
accessory - for additional money.
Basically you need a replacement for the normal low tech lid that has
a light and a film holder the price may be as much as the scanner
it's self.
These will not give you quite the same quality or maximum resolution
as a dedicated film scanner unit. BUT these addaptors can scan medium
format negatives and transparencies (6x4/6x6/6x8 etc)
There are numerous places that will do this scanning for you
including I belive the major camera shops like Jerry Gibbs.
Be aware that with most of these services they are only scanning the
images as JPEG files at a very low resolution so the image size and
quality is equivalent to only a 1.3 MP digital camera file.
That's good enough for screen display and, if your not interested
in doing any editing or croping before you reprint, usually good
enough for printing to images 6x4"
If you need to produce large 6x8" or bigger prints then the above
solution is good enough to give you an idea of which negatives &
slides you want re-scanned at a professional resolution and format
(say equivalent to, say, a 8MP to 16MP camera in uncompressed TIFF
or BMP format) these will usually be done on a drum scanner and
beyond even it's resolution and size give a much higher image quality
in terms of contrast and colour accuracy (and no pixel fakery through
interpolation)
Happy New Year to all at WAMUG
I am scanning my way through old photos and am now faced with slides and
negatives. My Epson CX3100 is not equipped to do this.
Purchasing another scanner with this function is probably not justified for
the number I have.
Is there a gadget that I can buy to attach to my flatbed scanner? Or is
there a local firm who can do this for me? Or is there anyone who hires out
such equipment?
I notice one firm in Sydney will transfer 50 slides on to a DVD as a slide
show for about $65. 100 for about $90
By the way, thanks to those who suggested scanning with Image Capture. Very
quick and efficient.
