Thanks for the help, I got it done using the external and setting it as
the startup disc. It didn't have a way of resetting the startup though
so i had to trick it but all is well now... thanks again for the help

For external, put the disk in and then select it in 'Startup Disk'.
For another Mac you can use Target Disk Mode over a Firewire cable.
