I know just how you feel, I have a scampering mouse too and when it
scampers off to the hot corner and brings up the screen saver.... well
sometimes the air gets a little blue tinge to it.
If you find a solution please share it... thanks

Hi James
The motion problem has only occurred whilst using optical mice.
As I have noticed almost identical symptoms under very different
combinations I believe your suggestion of the surface involved to be
the most plausible so far.
However I think the surfaces used when I have experienced this may
have been just as varied.
Currently our mice run on two different textured of varnished wooden
table tops.
The AOpen mouse on the B&W G3 seems OK on it's hard varnished surface,
the Labtec one on the G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) is currently the main
culprit.
However, the Win2000 PC that used to do the crazy laps was using the
same mouse and surface as the G3.
I have been willing to accept the behaviour for some time but it is
slowly p*ssing me off ;-)
Seeing as how I've blown my monthly gadget-budget on a Dvico digital
tuner card I may have to practice yet more Zen detachment even though
I'd rather perform a mouse detachment.
I will try using a mouse pad for the G4 but for me this takes away the
benefits of saved space in our cluttered workspace, where will I put
my coffee?
Well.... I do have a salvaged Hard Disk for that ;-)
Thanks
Paul

Paul,
Just as an anecdotal datum, I can't personally recall every
experiencing the motion-related behaviour you describe, not under any
platform (Mac Classic, Mac OS X, Windows, Sun Solaris, Linux for
intel, etc.) nor with any type of mouse, trackball or trackpad, nor
with ADB, PS/2, USB, Bluetooth, or whatever Sun workstations use.
Where I have had cursor problems, it has been due to mechanical
interference (or from operating in a specific program that tries to do
something "clever"). I am not clear whether you are using optical or
ball mice. if optical, have you considered the surface(s) atop which
the mouse is used? It is possible that some surfaces or artefacts will
confuse the optical detection system.
Your other problem, of clicks failing to register, can be caused by
software, combinations of software, or the computer being "busy" or
focussed in the wrong window. But those tend to manifest in specific
and reproducible situations.
Has anyone noticed problems with their cursor where it will shoot
off to a corner etc.?
On a PC we had it would even do a few *high speed* laps around the
edge of the screen.
I have a Labtec USB mouse attached to a Gigabit G4 via keyboard
port however I have noticed this on other platform/mouse/port
combinations, even MS mice.
Also, sometimes a click will not register at all, not sure if this
is the mouse button or the set-up though.
My current thinking is that cheesy mice are to blame.
Any ideas?
