Keyboard backlighting

Even though I have illuminate keyboard in low light conditions turned  
in in the system preferences my backlighting is not working. It was  
happening prior to updating to 10.4.4

Any ideas please?
15" PowerBook 1.5GHz 1G RAM 10.4.4
