Hi All

Well, it has happened again and I'm quite impressed this time.

Normally this is something like using a Mac to get modem drivers for windoze or browsing forums and howtos looking for some kooky voodoo-like solution.

Much more sophisticated this time:

A friend brings a dead PC around complaining of a black screen.
Sure enough; its quite dead.
The mainboard has died. Not surprising, there are signs of mutilation here and there on this unit.
A cobbled together celeron machine.

I test all the other components and they are fine, however when I connect the Hard Drive to another PC to retrieve the files I am met with an odd thing indeed. When I go to the equivalent of the 'Users' folder, the folder that should be named 'Lisa' is named '...'!
Yes, that is '...' as in dotdotdot!
OK, I try to open it: access denied.
Hmm. Try Properties (Get Info): Size 0kb.
Oh dear, and the client has no idea that this has happened, their PC just didn't turn back on one day so they rang me. Among other valued files this folder *should* contain the portfolio of this artist.
Oops.
Any utilities or repairs I tried had no effect, it looked bad.
I express commiserations to the client and suggest that they prepare for the worst; data corruption.

My last avenue is to attach it to an OSX G4 sporting a PCI IDE card (thanks Daniel).
You guessed it; lucky Lisa.

Files successfully copied.

If I actually try to make a folder called '...' in windoze it fails, so how this has happened... who cares, just so long as there is a better way of doing things.

Cheers
Paul
