Hi Rosemary,

We have come across this problem with many USB print servers. A good deal of
the USB Multifunctionals will generally not work on a USB print server
although some can be printed to. This goes for most print servers. In fact
there are a number of printers that won't work as well, generally GDI
printers or CAPT from Canon, as they have proprietary commands. We've had a
Canon printer (LBP-2410) just not work with anything. I have also had some
issues with print servers "disappearing". They can be touchy about the
sequence of powering up. For instance, I spent an hour once with a usb print
server and Canon ip3000, where the print server was visible on the network,
but once I plugged in the printer, the printer LED started flashing orange.
Eventually worked out, turn off print server, turn on printer, WAIT until
printer had gone through warm up sequence and LED was solid green, THEN turn
on PS. It may be different for the Airport Express.

Have a look at this from Apple;

And this is interesting from Netgear;
