If you are a command line adept you can get her to turn on remote login (in
sharing) read off the IP address from the network control panel and SSH into
her box with the admin credentials. If you prefer to look at pictures have
her download and install OSXvnc. You can then use a client VNC program like
"Chicken of the VNC" to view her desktop and control her screen. If you are
a true CLI sensei it is possible to install the VNC program using the
command line and reboot remotely.

I must say when it comes to a mother in law however I would be inclined to
plead complete ignorance. You know like "Mac? What's a Mac?".
