Hi Colin,

You can try running these commands from a terminal. 

They are run as sudo (or root) so be carefull to type
the exact command (copy and paste is probably best. 
and it will prompt you to type in an password.  This
must be run from an account with admin access. 

sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

sudo diskutil repairPermissions /

cd /

sudo touch mach_kernel    

(you need to reboot after this last command and expect
that the next reboot will be a bit slower, but
following reboots should be a bit faster.)


You can also boot, holding shift.  This will run fsck
in the backround I believe.  This will cause booting
to be slow and you'll need to reboot later because
booting with shift, is a way to boot with few things
running then you may want (i.e. no airport and likely
third party stuff).
